Revlog: Insurgent and the FBI at EvilVlog

My friend Josh Wolf has posted an amazing entry at EvilVlog about his Federal subpoena and the possible shutdown of one of his websites.  "This is what a police state looks like!"

I admire Josh a great deal and can't think of a better person to get some of their time. Josh's statement should prove interesting, although we may never know as these investigations are often closed to the general public and the transcripts sealed.

Quartz Composer Test

CarpFlowLgThis is just a test to see how a Quartz Composer QuickTime export looks and is handled in browsers and aggregators.  There is no audio and you need QuickTime7 on Tiger to view this, so don't fret if you have trouble with this.  It's just all us Mac users leaving you in the dust.  Go back to sleep...

Ok, ok.  Here is a screen capture that all can see.  It has audio and a live image capture.  Unfortunately, the export to QuickTime loses the image capture and a white box appears in it's place.  Thus, in order to distribute a file that incorporates the user's webcam, it is necessary to distribute the movie as a Quartz .qtz file.  These are now playable in QuickTime7, but most browsers and aggregators don't know what to do with the file.

Don't worry, I'm not converting to QT7 just yet.  This is just an experiment.  Ah, ah, ah.  Don't touch that feed!

MacWorld Wine Tasting

We stopped by a wine bar for a demonstration of VideoEgg's blogging software. I was blown away by the high-tech wine dispensors. Guess I don't get to the big city enough these days. They also make you pay for your parking before you get your car these days, but that's another story. Click the pic to view the vid.

Pink Fuzzy iPod Covers

They should call it iPodWorld instead of MacWorld. This one's for you PJ.

The Winning Spirit of Collaboration

Dave Toole Created this cool collaboration mash-up for the Node 101 presentation at the Metreon during MacWorld. I'm posting this, so leave Dave a comment on the SpinFlow site. Also, check out Dave's cool file sharing tool call SpinXpress. It's free! Exchange files securely and privately by just dragging and dropping files in your own Secure Personal InterNet (SPIN).

Node 101 Meets BAAP At MacWorld

While cruising the MacWorld Exhibition with Schlomo, we spoke with Debbie of the Bay Area Alterative Press. We had a lot in common and might be able to help each other out. She was in one of the small booths in the back, next to the EFF. I think there's more interesting folks back there in the 'cheap' seats as most of the main floor was mainly just iPod accessories.

MacWorld2006: VideoEgg Demonstration and Wine Tasting

I went to San Francisco to meetup with vloggers who came out for MacWorld. On Sunday, I meetup with Ryanne Hodson, Michael Verdi and Dave Toole for a great Chinese dinner in The City. Then we all went to Marin to crash at Dave's cool Tiburon pad. On Monday, we went back into The City to check out the place where the MacWorld Node101 demo will be on Thursday. Later, stopped by a little wine tasting and demo of VideoEgg videoblogging service that is used in TypePad. We joined up with JD Lasica, Dan Gilmor and Josh Kinsberg. Here's a video of the demo they pitched us. Note to WordPress users, listen carefully for the part where our host gives a little hint of things to come. Overall, I was pretty impressed with the demo and will have to give the service a try soon (it's already in TypePad). The big question: is RSS supported?

1991 Next Vs. Sun Application Development Competiton

Here is an 18 minute video from November 1991, showing a "competiton" between a pair of Next and Sun application developers. Dig the $15,000 and $22,000 workstations with 32MB of RAM and 400MB of hard disk space. Wow! A flash from the past! This came up today in the Yahoo Videoblogging Group and so I captured this old promo video tape that I got back when I was working in the Microcomputer Laboratory at UC Santa Barbara. We had a really nifty Next lab with about 20 workstations. It was very cool. Note that the Next is a "Color" model - whoot! Those were the days, my friends ... Click the pic to view the vid.
